Responsibilities as an Attending Physician and Associate Chair of Obstetrics & Gynecology:
- The purpose of this role is to direct quality, safety and operations work for the Obstetrics Service including labor and delivery and maternity as well as outpatient obstetrical services, lead new programmatic development, and oversee strategic growth of the services.
- This administrative role reports to the Department Chair, and serves on the Department Executive Committee. The time allocated to this role will be one and half days per week, and all other responsibilities will continue outside of this dedicated time.
Responsibilities will include: - Partner with the Department Chair to plan for strategic growth of the clinical enterprise while maintaining its academic excellence and productivity.
- Partner with the Department Chair and Service Chiefs to continuously improve quality of care delivered to patients; this includes management of key performance indicators such as length of stay, on-time starts, surgical site infections, etc.
- In the Chairs absence, represent the Chair and department.
- Oversee and supervise the improvement and expansion of clinical facilities for gynecologic services.
- Oversee clinical faculty and staff involved in the delivery of patient care.
- Optimize departmental block time utilization for current physicians and new recruits.
- Evaluation of surgical privileges and credentialing/recredentialing processes for gynecologic surgery.
- Oversight of clinical protocols and creation of new protocols/pathways to optimize patient outcomes.
- Participate in the departmental Executive Committee, departmental Quality Assurance, Committee, and other committees as needed/appropriate.
Other initiatives as mandated by the Joint Commission, CME, or New York State.
- Direct, oversee, manage, and evaluate all aspects of clinical services and medical education activities.
- Integrate multiple personnel including physicians, residents, midwives, and nurses.
- Enhance professional development of all attending staff.
- Provide direct clinical care to patients, which will include maternal fetal medicine consultation.
- Demonstrate knowledge in obstetrics.
- Prove competence in CME development, case reviews, research, and medical student teaching.
- Show ability to develop relationships with resident training program leadership.
- Perform full range of administrative/operational responsibilities to ensure the efficient achievement of departmental goals and effective deli very of medical care.
- Provide direct and in direct support for the OPPE/FPPE process.
- Exercise responsibility for the quality and safety of Direct Patient Care Services including, but not limited to, the performance of ongoing performance.
- improvement activities and compliance with all Performance Indicators.
- Set goals and objectives for the MFM division that are consistent with the mission and vision of the department and health system. Delineate strategies and tactics for implementing and achieving value-based goals. Ensure the execution of strategic initiatives.
- Provide oversight to the Director of the MFM Fellowship Program, ensuring that the program meets the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) sub-specialty training requirements for the maternal fetal medicine.
- Provide operational and mentoring oversight to the Director of Obstetrical Ultrasound and the Site Director of Maternal Fetal Medicine.
- Monitor research activities conducted by members of the MFM Division to ensure compliance with institutional mission and standards.
- Grow the existing research infrastructure and work to augment funding, publication, and recognition of the division's research.
- Maintain and promote quality, safe and efficient clinical care in MFM practices.
- Provide leadership and mentorship to MFM faculty, fellows, residents, and students to improve quality of care, patient service, and medical knowledge.
- Manage all aspects of the MFM physician schedules, while meeting all clinical and academic obligations.
- Develop and maintain protocols for patient care to optimize efficiency and patient safety.
- Develop cohesive, collaborative approaches to the care of the pregnancies with the high risk fetal and/or maternal issues in coordination with pediatric, genetics, radiology (i.e., prenatal MRI), pediatric subspecialties and OB anesthesiology, maternal subspecialties, and the delivering obstetrician.
- Lead outreach efforts on behalf of the department.
- Inpatient and outpatient care of high-risk obstetrical patients with service coverage per the routine schedule.
- Coverage of High-Risk Clinic.
- Consult to the generalist and midwifery service for patient care.
- Maternal fetal testing unit.
- Interpretation of obstetrical ultrasound.
- Antenatal diagnosis, testing and fetal evaluation.
- Liaise with specialists to improve care mother & fetus.
- Teach medical students, resident and other learners.
- MFM weekly call coverage.
- Call coverage will include MFM consult call from home.
- Participate in the Maternal Hospital Quality Improvement Network to recognize and reduce severe maternal morbidity and mortality.
- Promote and oversee development of standard work and adoption of practice guidelines that promote quality, cost-effective care for the patient population.
- Ensure that appropriate quality improvement standards/metrics for the Obstetrics Division are established, maintained and reported.
- Participate in clinical quality initiatives focused on improving the patient experience, patient safety clinical outcomes, enhancing systems to assure timeliness and efficiency and assuring quality while maintaining fiscal responsibility.
- Provide leadership and disseminate practice standards and accountabilities to non¬ physician Obstetrics & Gynecology staff, physicians, residents and medical students.
- Participate in risk case reviews for formal RCAs and departmental QI and M&M conferences.
- Ensure a culture of open dialogue with alI staff, promote healthy team norms, and develop pathways to support staff and promote wellness.
- Ensure a culture of diversity and inclusion within the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology. Identify and address areas of inequity by promoting activities that build awareness and acceptance of all individuals.
- Create, implement and maintain defined objectives for Obstetrical services for clinical improvement, growth, and the expansion of services.
